Synthesis of Anionic Surfactants
The main methods used for the synthesis of anionic surfactants are:
1. Sulfonation of Alkylbenzene or Higher Alcohols
In this process, alkylbenzenes or higher alcohols are reacted with concentrated sulfuric acid or chlorosulfonic acid to produce the corresponding alkylbenzene sulfonates or alkyl sulfates respectively. For example, the reaction of dodecylbenzene with chlorosulfonic acid yields dodecylbenzene sulfonate.
2. Sulfation of Higher Alcohols
In this method, higher alcohols are reacted with chlorosulfonic acid or sulfur trioxide gas to yield the corresponding alkyl sulfate surfactants. For example, sulfation of lauryl alcohol produces sodium lauryl sulfate.
3. Carboxylation of Higher Alcohols
Higher alcohols can react with sodium hypochlorite or sodium chloroacetate to form the respective carboxylates surfactants. For instance, carboxylation of stearyl alcohol with sodium hypochlorite gives sodium stearyl carboxylate.
4. Reaction of Fatty Acids with Sodium Hydrosulfite
Natural fatty acids derived from plants and animals fats on reaction with sodium hydrosulfite in presence of oxygen produces the corresponding alkyl sulfonates. For example, reaction of oleic acid leads to the formation of sodium olefin sulfonate.

Detergents and Cleaning Products
Anionic surfactants are key ingredients in household and industrial detergents due to their excellent detergency, wetting and dirt removal abilities. Sodium alkyl sulfates and alkylbenzene sulfonates are commonly used.
Personal Care Products
Anionic agents are integral part of personal care formulations such as shampoos, hand wash, liquid soaps, shaving creams, etc. due to ability to produce rich lather and impart mildness. Sodium laureth sulfate and sodium cocoamphoacetate are major active surfactants.
Agrochemicals
As emulsifiers and dispersing agents, alkyl sulfates and alkylnaphthalene sulfonates are utilized in formulations of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides.
**Textile Processing
Anionic dyes often require anionic surfactants as dispersing agents during coloring of synthetic fabrics, silk, wool and nylon. Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate finds application.
Pharmaceuticals**
Emulsifying and wetting properties make anionic surfactants valuable excipients in ointments, creams and lotions. Sodium lauryl sulfate is commonly used.
Others uses includes oil recovery, metalworking fluids, leather processing, paints and coatings etc. Sodium salts are generally used due to stability at high pH.
